FROM SIX TO SIXTY

K Smith Studio in collaboration with The Place for Art will be one of the 11 venues showcasing local artists for Transforming Spaces 2008, the island’s premier art experience.  Started in 2005, Transforming Spaces has quickly grown to be a greatly anticipated island wide bus tour of artists’ studios and gallery spaces and was designed to nurture increased co-operation and a sense of community amongst local art spaces as well as to stimulate more exposure, interactions and deeper dialogue between artists and the Bahamian public.  All funds raised from this dynamic experience are donated to the Brent Malone Artist in Residence Fund.

K Smith Studio will feature the works of K Smith, Doulton Evans-Gibson, and Jeremy Cartwright.  These three artists will present to the Transforming Spaces patrons individual collections of their realistic drawings and paintings.

K Smith, one of the leading pencil artists in North America and the Caribbean, will be showing selected pieces from his most recent collection of coloured pencil drawings as well as launching the release of his newest Limited Edition print titled “Sea Urchin Shells with Reflection”.

Doulton Evans-Gibson, a product of the FINCO Summer Art Program during the 1990s as well as an award winning artist in the 2001 Central Bank of The Bahamas Art Competition, will be showcasing a collection of paintings.  Many of his figure paintings evoke an emotional connection and sometimes speak to the viewer.  Doulton Evans-Gibson has chosen to work in oil and watercolour for this year’s tour.

Jeremy Cartwright, a 12th grade student at Queen’s College, is a relative newcomer to the local art scene.  He studied art and drawing for five years at The Place for Art under the mentorship of K Smith.  Jeremy Cartwright has participated in the past two Bahamas National Trust Wine and Art Festivals and currently shows his work in local art galleries and gift shops.  For Transforming Spaces Jeremy Cartwright will be presenting both coloured pencil and soft pastel drawings.

Transforming Spaces patrons will also have the opportunity to see a diverse collection of artwork from students who attend weekly art classes at The Place for Art and who range in age from 6 years old to 60 plus years old.  This diverse collection of artwork will include collages, mobiles, frottages, graphite drawings, coloured pencil drawings and more.  Established in 2001, The Place for Art is a specialized art education studio that offers a variety of art classes that are designed and led by K Smith who brings a wealth of over 30 years teaching experience in The Bahamas, Canada, and The United Kingdom.  He has been blessed with the innate gift of art and feels compelled to share this gift with the people of The Bahamas by mentoring novice artists and inspiring young artistic minds.

The philosophy at The Place for Art is that art is a process rather than a product, thereby allowing students to study and create art in a non-threatening stress-free environment.  During its seven years of operation, The Place for Art has been fortunate to have had established local artists such as Thierry Lamare and Sue Katz Lightbourn visit the studio and share their talents with children and teenagers.

I. Gibson Secondary School, was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2006 Central Bank of the Bahamas Annual Art Competition.
