“IN THE BALANCE”

AN EXHIBITION OF WORKS BY JACKSON BURNSIDE

The forty year professional career of Jackson Burnside has been, in his own words, “a rambling through the culture of the Bahamas connecting diverse disciplines and integrating intuition with common knowledge.”

From the folk art shacks to the academic halls Burnside has functioned as a designer, architect, painter, talk show host and university lecturer combining a variety of artistic and scientific systems. This creative search for personal and national identity has been a long and patient struggle to balance the personal and the commercial, the emotional and the rational.

Burnside, who practices as an Architect and has been a major player in the management and design of junkanoo parades, describes himself simply as “Artist”. As a painter he has exhibited locally and abroad as an individual, a member of B-C.A.U.S.E., and in the Burnside-Beadle-Burnside collaboration with fellow artists, brother Stan Burnside and friend John Beadle.

This exhibition samples the broad spectrum of Burnside’s artistic journey showing architecture, furniture, graphics, collaborations, paintings, and an ongoing installation which investigates both the local and universal physical and social poles of love and hate.

This is not a typical ‘one man Show’, rather it is a showing of one man’s need to work alone and in collaboration with other artistic souls to respond to the need to express.

“In The Balance” will be one of the stops for the Transforming Spaces Art Tour and the Exhibition will christen the re-opening of the Doongalik Studios #18 Village Road location which operated as an Art Gallery for several years previously before moving to the picturesque Marina Village at Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas.

The vision of Doongalik Studios, which was created in the 1970’s by Jackson and Pam Burnside, has been to establish The Bahamas as an international center of creativity. The owners are committed to the mission that by the year 2020, more visitors will come
to The Bahamas to experience our Art, Culture and Heritage rather than merely for Sun, Sand and Sea.
